Our suggestions are as follows:
We researched the possibility of adding iodide to common foods and drinks. We suggest that iodised salt be used for snack foods like popcorn, crisps and salted nuts.In this way the public would not have to change their whole diets to include unusual foods like seaweed which we proved to contain iodide to increase their intake of the mineral.
It is also likely that iodine is preserved in alcohol and so we could add it to alcoholic drinks which are not only popular but could also be stored for longer periods of time.
In our research(see Results section), we learnt that iodine can be added to powdered foods by adding iodide liquid to the mixture of food before using a spray-dryer to convert it all into powder
We are suggesting that this be done to powdered foods like soups. We contacted two leading powdered food companies, one of which was willing to add iodide to their soups.
During our research in the supermarkets, we saw that many of the tinned fish products had long shelf-lives. Tinned salmon only expires in 2005 and was produced this year (2002). We saw that this was because it was being preserved in a salt solution called brine. Couldn't we use iodised salt for this salt solution? These foods could also be kept in the house for long periods of time
Therefore, our message to you, people of Ireland, is...
